When to use a 25 mile radius
A 25 mile circle usually takes in a whole metropolitan area: the central city, its suburbs, and the edge of the surrounding countryside. That makes it a natural size for questions about where people live, work, and travel within a region.
- Commuting. Compare 25 mile circles around two job offers, or around your home and a partner’s workplace, to see which suburbs fall within a reasonable commute of both.
- Service areas. Trades, home services, and mobile businesses often set a 25 mile limit for standard pricing. Google’s guidance for service-area businesses suggests keeping the area within about two hours’ drive of the business base.
- Restrictive covenants. Non-compete and non-solicitation clauses sometimes name a radius such as 10, 25, or 50 miles. Whether a radius is enforceable depends on local law, so treat the map as a picture, not legal advice.
- Event and venue planning. A 25 mile circle around a venue shows which towns are within a typical travel range for a one-day event.
Make a 25 mile radius map
- Search the center address or click it on the map.
- Choose the 25 preset or type 25 and select miles.
- Scroll to Towns and cities inside the circle to see every place of 15,000+ residents, sorted by distance or size.
- Download the list as CSV, or export the circle as KML for Google Earth and My Maps.
A 25 mile radius in numbers
| Radius | 40.2 km · 21.7 nautical miles · 132,000 feet |
|---|---|
| Diameter | 50.0 miles · 80.5 km |
| Circumference | 157.1 miles · 252.8 km |
| Area | 1,963 sq mi · 5,085 km² |
| Area in land units | 1,256,633 acres · 508,541 hectares |
Area and circumference are calculated on a spherical Earth, so very large circles are slightly smaller than πr² suggests.
How long does it take to cross a 25 mile radius?
These times cover the straight-line distance from the center to the edge at a steady speed. Real routes are longer: road networks usually add 20 to 40 percent to the straight-line distance, more where rivers, hills, or coastlines force detours.
| Way of travel | Center to edge | With a 30% detour |
|---|---|---|
| Walking (3 mph / 5 km/h) | 8 h 20 min | 10 h 50 min |
| Cycling (12 mph / 19 km/h) | 2 h 5 min | 2 h 43 min |
| Driving on city streets (25 mph / 40 km/h) | 1 h 0 min | 1 h 18 min |
| Driving on highways (60 mph / 97 km/h) | 25 min | 33 min |

Distance is not drive time
At this scale, roads and geography shape what is really “within 25 miles.” A bridge crossing, mountain pass, or congested highway can make one side of the circle an hour away while the other is 30 minutes. For delivery promises or emergency response, use the circle to shortlist locations, then check drive times for the places at its edge.
